Transitioning Home After Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment

BPD treatment transitioning homeIf you are in recovery from Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), you have already fought a hard-won battle. BPD was long believed to be one of the most difficult mental illnesses to treat. For many years it was considered untreatable. Thankfully, with advances and research into the causes of and treatment for BPD, this perspective has changed.

Part of the recovery process for Borderline Personality Disorder is transitioning back into life once you’ve completed your program. A reputable Borderline Personality Disorder treatment center should be able to help you with a solid exit strategy that will make the transition home an easier one. Many will have educational and vocational programs to help you get back into the world.

A study that appeared in The American Journal of Psychiatry showed that “good social and vocational functioning” is imperative for long-term recovery from symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder. This can be a challenge, as the world you left behind when you went into treatment for BPD will likely look quite a bit different upon your return. While this should be seen as a good thing, the change in your perspective can be jarring.

Social

Staying in a group therapy setting can be valuable as you ease your way back into the world. Discovering you are not alone in the struggles you may be experiencing is helpful. With that said, finding social circles outside of your BPD treatment center is important as well. Find an activity you are interested in. Maybe there is a Meetup group online you can join. Your interests are part of who you are and part of what makes you unique. Remember that you are not just “someone in recovery from BPD.”

Vocational

Some BPD treatment centers offer career counseling and can help you identify your strengths and interests in particular occupations. Some will even help you write resumes and cover letters. Some offer group and individual therapy sessions to help you cope with any anxiety that might arise from your job search.

Educational

Similarly, many Borderline Personality Disorder treatment centers offer educational counseling if you are looking to go back to school.

Physical

Staying in touch with your physical side can help in maintaining your recovery from BPD. Physical activity like yoga, biking, long walks, or running helps you center yourself and can give you a sense of control over your body and your mind.

These types of support are vital in your journey of recovery from Borderline Personality Disorder. It’s important to remember that you have already fought half the battle and won, and to be patient with yourself as you make your way back into the world.
