Keeping Stress Low During the Holidays

Stress-free holidaysWhile holiday cards advertise the spread of joy and cheer, when you’re managing Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), the holidays can seem like a tremendous source of stress. But there are plenty of things you can do to help you survive the holiday season so that it is enjoyable for both you and your loved ones.

Stick to Normal Routines

As much as you can, stick to your normal routines. That includes diet, exercise, and sleep. If you normally eat oatmeal for breakfast, don’t switch to holiday candy just because it is lying around. Make sure you have enough time in the morning to eat something healthy and balanced. This will keep you going throughout your day.

With the additional calories you’ll inevitably consume during holiday meals and gatherings, make sure you don’t skimp on your daily exercise. Take the stairs instead of waiting for the elevator, or wake up half an hour early to walk around your neighborhood before the morning rush. Simple exercises like these will lower your stress hormones and raise levels of endorphins, brain chemicals that make us feel good.

Even though holiday parties may run late, make sure you catch up on sleep. Take naps during the day if necessary and let your body adjust from travel.

Set Limits

Once sleep, exercise, and diet are stable, set limits for yourself. With office parties, social gatherings, family traditions, and other seasonal events, it is easy for your calendar to get overcrowded.

Decide for yourself how many invitations you can accept, and don’t be afraid to politely turn down friends or family if you feel overwhelmed. It is better to attend one or two meaningful holiday celebrations than become stressed out by appearing at 10.

Also, set limits about what you can spend. If you are hosting family or friends at your home, consider not only food expenses but also things such as toiletries and laundry. Again, don’t be afraid to let your guests know if you will not be able to entirely provide for them.

Remember that if you accept an invitation to a social gathering, you may be expected to bring a gift. Set up a strict budget for gift-buying and follow it. A short paragraph in a card telling someone how much you appreciate them is often worth more than a tangible item.

Maintain Your BPD Treatment Plan

If you have been receiving treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder or another psychiatric disorder, it is important to continue your treatment during the holidays. Continue to meet with your therapist, attend groups, and take any prescribed medications. Continuing your Borderline Personality Disorder treatment during the holidays will help you to maintain the progress you have made and keep stress at bay.
